Sciatica: when your leg pain doesn't start in your leg

If you're dealing with sciatica, I don't have to describe it to you. That hot, electric line from your low back down the back of your leg. Sitting through a meeting hurts. The drive down Tunnel Road hurts. Some mornings you put your socks on standing up because bending over is a gamble.

Here's what's actually going on. Your sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in your body, about as thick as your thumb, and it runs from your low back down each leg. When something irritates it near the spine, often a disc pushing where it shouldn't or a joint that's stopped moving well, the pain shows up anywhere along that line. That's why your leg can scream when the real problem is sitting up in your low back.

How we approach it at Radius

I'm not going to crack you the same way I'd adjust the next person through the door. Your first visit is a conversation, nervous system scans, and X-rays if you need them, so we know exactly what's irritating that nerve before anyone touches your spine.

From there, care usually looks like some mix of:

  • Gentle, specific adjustments using the Torque Release Technique. No twisting or forcing. We're taking pressure off the nerve, and you don't need a big crack to do that.
  • Spinal decompression on the Back on Trac. You sit in it like a recliner and it gently stretches the low back, which gives an irritated disc room to calm down. Most people find it genuinely comfortable, which surprises them.
  • High energy inductive therapy (PEMF). A paddle rests over your low back and hip and sends deep magnetic pulses into the tissue around the nerve. It feels like a strong, quick tapping, and nerve pain like sciatica is one of the things it handles best. When the leg pain is loud, we'll often add it to speed things up.

Some people feel a shift in a few visits. For others it's slower, especially if the sciatica has been building for years. I'll be straight with you about which one you're likely to be after I see your scans.

When to get checked

Don't wait it out for months. The longer a nerve stays irritated, the longer it usually takes to settle. And if you ever have numbness in the groin area or lose control of your bladder or bowels, that's an emergency room visit, not a chiropractic one. I'd rather you know that.

If it's been more than a couple weeks of leg pain, tingling, or that deep ache in one side of your hip, come in and let's find out what's driving it. Book online or call us at (828) 333-4447. We're in Four Seasons Plaza on Tunnel Road, with free parking under the building.

Common questions
Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?

Usually, yes. Most sciatica comes from pressure or irritation where the nerve leaves the low back, and that's exactly the area chiropractic care works with. The honest answer is that it depends on what's causing yours, which is why we scan and X-ray before we start.

How many visits will it take?

There's no one number. Some people feel a shift inside a few visits, and sciatica that took years to build usually takes longer to settle. After your first visit I'll show you what we found and give you a straight answer on timeline.

Is it safe to get adjusted with a disc problem?

The way we adjust, yes. Torque Release is a gentle, instrument-based technique. There's no twisting or cracking forced through an irritated disc. And if your X-rays show something chiropractic shouldn't touch, I'll tell you and point you to the right place.
